Heard of a keto diet plan? This is how it works.

Have you ever stood on a scale and felt your heart sink? It’s not just about the numbers on the display, it’s about the way you feel: aching, lethargic, self-conscious and hopeless.

Losing weight is hard work. You can try all the different diets and workouts in the world, but real results require real work. However, it is possible to lose stubborn weight once and for all, even if you’re not a fitness nut. All you have to do is follow the right protocol and stick to it.

Here at Ideal Health, we reset the body and the mind to reset what’s possible for you to achieve. We use a three-phase method called the Ideal Protein Protocol. These phases help you lose weight, stabilize the weight loss and then maintain your healthy new lifestyle to keep the weight off.

After all, anyone can lose weight, but if you don’t modify your lifestyle it will come creeping back. Our program is designed to empower you to make smarter, more sustainable lifestyle choices.

This program can help you, but only if you put in the work. We’ve helped many people over the years, and we have many success stories, but the most important is still to come: YOURS.

What is a ketogenic diet plan?

A ketogenic diet (often referred to as a “keto diet”) is a low-carb, high-fat diet that encourage the body to turn to its fat stores for energy. This metabolic state is called ketosis. It can cause massive reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels and you can lose weight without counting calories.

It’s much more effective than low-fat diets. In fact, a 2003 study by the University of Cincinnati and the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio found that a keto diet was 2.2 times more effective than a calorie-restricted low-fat diet. The best part is that you never have to go hungry.

Keto diets have many benefits aside from weight loss. It can improve insulin sensitivity, which can significantly improve the health of people living with pre-diabetes or Type 2 diabetes, lower risk factors of heart disease and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

So what does it actually look like in practice?

Foods to eat:

  • Meat such as steak and chicken
  • Fatty fish including salmon and trout
  • Eggs
  • Dairy (including cheese, butter and cream)
  • Nuts and seeds such as almonds and pumpkin seeds
  • Healthy oils such as extra virgin olive oil
  • Avocadoes
  • Green vegetables

Foods to avoid:

  • Sugary foods such as soda, fruit juice and candy
  • Grains and starches like bread, rice and pasta
  • Fruit (this is due to the high sugar content)
  • Beans, legumes and root vegetables
  • Low-far products as these are often highly-processed
  • Alcohol

What is the Ideal Protein Protocol?

Ideal Protein foods are a key part of the process, because our medically-developed keto diet will help you lose weight safely. You won’t be forced into a lifetime of purchasing pre-packaged food, but we’ll use this as a tool to help you start losing weight before you transition to eating foods you purchase and cook yourself. The average person loses 3-5 lbs per week in the first phase.

The idea is to bring your relationship with food back to the fundamentals: food is simply fuel for your body. Limiting your carbohydrate intake will encourage the body to burn fat, but Ideal Protein foods will make sure you don’t lose muscle mass. It offers good quality food with no GMOs, no trans-fats and no preservatives. Once your body is in a state of ketosis, and you’ve started shedding pounds, you’ll gradually increase your calories by incorporating more lean meats back into your diet.

Ideal Protein products can only be purchased from authorized weight loss centers. Our clinic, Ideal Health, is located at 401 E. Fireweed Lane, Suite 101, in Anchorage (on the corner of Denali Street).

(It’s important to note that while this Protocol does cater for vegetarian diets, it is not vegan.)

How to lose weight and keep it off

Keto diets reset the body so it learns to live from its own fat reserves. This redefines what’s possible when it comes to losing weight and keeping it off. We do this in three stages:

Phase 1: Weight loss

Phase one of our protocol is based on your diet.

The body employs energy from three reserves: carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Once the body depletes its simple and complex carbohydrate reserves, it will turn to its protein and fat reserves simultaneously. Body composition is an important tool here. A healthy person will typically have 1-2% of their reserves from carbohydrates, 18-19% from muscle mass and 79% from fat.

Simple and complex carbohydrates can prevent weight loss, which is why our protocol restricts them until 100% of your weight loss goal is achieved. To put it simply, as long as you are consuming sugar, you may not be burning fat. The key is to deplete the body’s carbohydrate reserves in order to compel the body to start using its fat reserve as an energy source.

A high-protein diet is essential to stop your body from consuming muscle.

Phase 2: Stabilization

Once the weight is off, it’s important to keep it off and make all your hard work worthwhile. This is where we work on resetting the mind, so you can develop healthy habits.

You may have noticed that when you’ve lost weight in the past, it’s all come piling back on very quickly. This is because the body fights to regain weight because it thinks that’s what it needs. We call this the energy gap. When your body desires more calories than it requires, it makes it very difficult to manage and maintain weight loss, so the stabilization phase is about narrowing the gap by adjusting your intake of carbohydrates, protein and fat to effectively manage hunger.

We conduct weekly follow-up sessions during this phase over the course of two months (or more) to monitor carbohydrate reintroduction and track your weight to make sure it’s stable. The idea is to empower you to develop balanced eating habits and make healthier lifestyle choices.

Phase 3: Maintenance

The most important part of every weight loss journey is maintenance. We want to help you live your fullest, healthiest, best life, so we will continue to support you for the first 12 months.

You will be able to check-in with your coach regularly and we recommend two semi-annual “tune-ups” to make sure you’re still feeling confident and empowered about your new lifestyle.

What is lifestyle modification

The Ideal Protein Protocol isn’t a diet program or an exercise program. It’s about lifestyle modification. We’re not about trends or under-researched theories. We use scientific research and a medically-developed diet to help people regain control of their bodies and their lives.

By resetting the body in phase one, then resetting the mind in phase two, we want to reset what’s possible in phase three. We believe in what we do. In fact, our coaches have all been on their own weight loss journeys, which is why they know what it takes to help you on yours.
